Introduction to Political Communication

Louisiana State University

Term: Fall 2024

Description: This course compares the role of political communication in a theoretical healthy democracy to the one we actually have.

Textbook: The Dynamics of Political Communication by Richard M. Perloff (3rd ed.).

Student feedback

"MC 3504 is a great introduction to political communications. The readings and discussions helped understand exactly what political communication is, how it is involved in our everyday lives why it is important, and more! The discussions were very open and inviting and did not get very "political" regarding the election and our persona viewpoints."

"The teaching style was nice, and the time for in class discussions was the most stand out time of the class. We were never limited on what we could talk about, and I enjoyed that all sides earned their respected representation."

"I enjoyed this class much more than I initially thought. I was intimidated by the amount of readings as well as the emphasis on participation, but Professor Jordan makes the class approachable and he is very understanding. A strength was the method of teaching and how we discussed each reading as a class but also in a small group. I sometimes thought that the amount of readings were excessive."

"The professor was great and encouraged students to be continuously engaged!"

"This course was effective in teaching about the many aspects of political communication. I would improve this course by having it be a bit more instructor led versus discussion based."

Student feedback

"I dropped this class two years ago due to the professor's unprofessionalism and inability to effective teach. I was extremely worried going into the class as it was my last semester by graduation and I could not drop or fail any class. Professor Jordan exceeded any expectations I had of the class and was one of the only professors in my time here that truly cared about his students and made sure every grade and every class lecture was related to the coursework. Thank you!"

"I enjoyed this course because it taught us to a deeper dive into where we are truly getting our information. The professor did not force his opinion onto anybody but instead listened to what everyone had to say."

"Professor Jordan took a huge topic and brought it down to topics that mattered to students, were relevant to our future careers in mass comm, and material that was dynamic and comprehensive. The class was a lot of information, but Professor Jordan worked hard to make each class interesting and interactive."

"... this remains one of my favorite Mass Communication classes, and I've learned a considerable amount of knowledge from it."

"I loved our professor I felt like he cared a lot about the subject which was a strength of the class. Another strength is his grading style allowed me to learn without being overwhelmed or stressed."

Textbook: no textbook.

Student feedback

"The highlight of this course is Professor Jordan, who is a fascinating lecturer and caring educator. He clearly loves what he's doing, which is always so nice to see. The class is very multi–faceted, and I loved how the praxis assignment was structured. That was definitely an interesting read that, if I hadn't have been in this class, I likely wouldn't have had the opportunity to read. I appreciated that we always got to share what we had been working on with the class, as I'm used to working on something for an entire semester only to have it read hastily by one person."

"The instructor referenced interesting and relevant studies and data. Studies [sic] were given a good amount of freedom to explore their areas of interest."

"I enjoyed the writing assignments. Professor Jordan was very clear with his requirements and how this writing style is used in the real world."

"Joshua Jordan is a wonderful instructor! He is very clear about the assignments and often gives templates for assignments."
